The spirit of friendly rivalry and Masonic fellowship was alive and well as The Travelling Trowel once again changed hands within the daughter Lodges of The Provincial Grand Lodge of Aberdeenshire East.

After a short spell in the safe keeping of Lodge St. James 256, the Trowel was firmly in their possession — but not for long. Determined and well-organised, Lodge Leask 1084 mounted a successful challenge and claimed the honour of becoming its new custodians. The photographs capture the warmth of the occasion: office bearers of both Lodges gathered in good humour, presenting and receiving the Trowel in the true spirit of brotherhood.

The Travelling Trowel is far more than a symbolic token. It represents a living tradition of fellowship, inter-Lodge visitation, and charitable purpose. Its movement between Lodges encourages Brethren to step beyond the walls of their own meetings, strengthening the bonds of fraternity across the Province. Each “capture” is a testament not only to enthusiasm and commitment, but also to the shared values that unite us.

At the heart of the initiative lies a charitable aim. The Lodge achieving the greatest number of captures during the challenge period earns the distinction of directing the funds raised to charities of their choice. In this way, the friendly competition translates directly into meaningful support for worthy causes within our communities.

With the Trowel now resting in the safe keeping of Lodge Leask 1084, attention turns quickly to the next opportunity for challenge. On Monday, 2nd March, Lodge Saint Ninians 66 will visit Lodge Leask 1084 for the advancement of Bro. Jaime Ewen to the Mark Degree. No doubt the Brethren of Lodge Saint Ninians will arrive not only to support the candidate in his advancement, but with a keen eye on the Travelling Trowel itself.

The tradition ensures that the Trowel never remains idle for long. Should it linger without challenge, the Provincial Grand Lodge may see fit to set it back in motion — but judging by the enthusiasm shown thus far, such intervention seems unlikely. The competitive yet fraternal spirit surrounding the initiative continues to inspire strong attendances, lively evenings, and generous giving.

The question now stands once more before the Lodges of the Province: who will rise next to the occasion? Will Lodge Leask 1084 retain their prize, or will it soon be travelling onward again?

Brethren, the Trowel is on the move. The challenge continues.
